Question
How to enable a single view of resource pools across multiple vCloud Director Instances?
Environment
OnApp 5.6.x (and later) with vCloud Director integration
Answer
In the OnApp 5.6 release, we have introduced support for multiple Organisations within a single user group. This enables you to provide your customers with the ability to manage resources located in different vCloud Director instances from a single UI.
It is easy to configure and get all done within the OnApp platform with no additional configuration of vCD.
1. The first step is to ensure you have added multiple vCloud Director instances to OnApp. This is done under Settings, Compute Resources.
2. Then ensure that the vCD instances have been configured for Multiple vCloud mode. This basically removes the direct mapping between User Group <> Organisation, enabling you to create an Organisation and assign to a new or existing user group of your choice.
Select the label for the Compute Resource, then go to Tools, Switch to Multiple vCloud Mode.
Note: Once you have changed the mode, you will not be able to change it back.
3. Now when you have created a new organization, you will get the option to assign to an existing User Group or create a new one.
4. If you have existing Organisations that do not belong to a user group, you can go to Settings - Compute Resources - Tools and 'Import Organisations from vCloud' and choose to assign them to an existing group or create a new one.
Now your customers will have a single view of resource pools across multiple vCloud Director Instances, improving their ability to create highly available and resilient services.
