Answer
The ports of the switch used for VM networking should be in trunk mode. It should be configured to tag packets with VLAN ID. Trunk and Access modes of port are borrowed from Cisco Catalyst's terms, but most switches will have similar modes.
Access - port has access to the VLAN and any incoming packets will be tagged with VLAN ID.
Trunk - port has access to VLAN and accepts incoming tagged packets and forwards the packets tagged with VLAN ID.
