Question
How many VMs can I provision on one hypervisor?
Environment
All versions of OnApp
Answer
We understand that it's an important part of your business model to understand and work out how many Virtual Machines can be provisioned on your OnApp Hypervisor. Here are some important facts, which you may find helpful:
- Bear in mind that you cannot oversell RAM under OnApp with XEN or KVM! Once all the RAM has been allocated, you will be unable to provision new virtual machines on that hypervisor.
- You also need to be aware that in case of a hypervisors failing, OnApp will automatically move the virtual machines across all your available hypervisors, depending on the resources that are available. This is another important reason to load your hypervisors below maximum capacity so there is space for the VMs to failover if necessary.
- If you have VMs which work together to offer redundancy, for example DNS servers, it's always better to spread your virtual machines out over multiple hypervisors.
- Beyond this, the limit is really only based on your hardware.
